Kate is about to embark on a gruelling challenge as part of this
years BBC Sport Relief weekend.
She is teaming up with Major Phil Packer - a friend whom she first
interviewed on the 'sofa' on BBC Breakfast as he was about to
undertake the London marathon.
Phil sustained a spinal chord injury while on operational duty in
Iraq. Two years ago he was told he may not walk again. His
determination and courage have seen him take on a number of
challenges in his effort to gain more mobility and to demonstrate
to others that having a disability does not always mean one has to
give up trying and give up having goals in life.
Together they will climb the three highest peaks in Scotland, England
and Wales respectively - nationally known as "The Three Peak
It will be a tough climb after one of the most gruelling
winters we have seen. Traditionally the climb is undertaken during
the summer - but the pair are tackling the peaks at a time when
temperatures on Ben Nevis are minus 7 degrees centigrade and with
winds of 18mph. They will aim to complete the climbs in under 72
hours.
Their efforts will be broadcast live across Five Live programmes
culminating in a one and a half hour programme this Sunday morning
7th March at 09.30 when they will be joined by Sir Steve Redgrave
and Sir Clive Edwards - two of Phil's heroes, who will undertake the
final climb up Snowdon with Kate and Phil.
Do listen in to Five Live this Sunday.
Their climb will be filmed and shown on Sport Relief weekend and a
special documentary about Phil for the BBC's Inside Sport programme.
In the meantime Kate says "We'd love you to join us in a challenge -
so many people are taking part in the sport relief mile - or turning
up to spectate at the many events going on across the country. Or if
you fancy you can simply donate and know that your money will go
towards a number of charities both here in the UK and internationally.
Thank you and wish us luck!!"
